The Shaykh's Teachings at the Approach of Ramadan

During the whole month of Shahban, preceding the blessed month of Ramadan, Shaykh Ahmadu Bamba used to multiply warnings against mundane activities or amusements of any kind. These sermons echoed like blatant reminder prior the blessed month looming in the horizon. It was a way to get people ready to better take profit from this sublime month of devotion.

In his book dedicated to his father and spiritual guide Shaykhul Khadim entitled “The Blessings of the Everlasting in the Biography of Shaykhal Khadim (the Master Servant)” Shaykh Muhammad El Bachir Mbacke gave the following testimony that it was frequent to hear the Shaykh says:

Be constant in the introspection of your heart and the preservation of your body parts, for the sworn enemy, Satan, knowing his looming sentencing as soon as the new moon appears, and this during the entire blessed month, is firmly rushing to alter or change your faith.
He tries to plant in you the seeds that, once grown, will annihilate in you any strength or force capable of eliminating or erasing them. Thus a stained heart will never be able to receive Allah (SWT) blessings.
In fact, Heavens’ gates are wide opened in the whole blessed month of Ramadan, so that prayers may reach Allah (SWT), wishes be accepted and benedictions be widespread. Though shield yourself against the enemy, for he is on the look out for the slightest mistake to stain your heart with vices.”

Also during the month of Shahban, disciples in spiritual training under his care would receive an extra work schedule higher than usual, in addition to an array of pious activities and tasks.

He would top it off with sequences of exhortations he would lead regularly to prevent people from indulging into laziness and to help them take profit from the graces deriving from the vivification of the blessed month.
